Since the recession began and massive layoffs put so many families out of work and into bad situations, working from home has become a necessary part of many American’s lives. For those who are lucky enough to have an expertise and can find sub-contracting work from home, the transition from an office type work environment to a home type work environment is much smoother. The financial ramifications of losing your job are less severe.
For those who do not have an extensive knowledge or education in a certain field, the loss of a job is devastating. The struggles of finding any type of full time work, whether at home or for a business are severe. There are fewer options available. This group of workers is finding themselves floating along in a sea of other out of work folks with no direction and no idea how to get by. The important thing in this situation is to just start looking for any type of work you can find. It is important to be creative and think outside the box. Accept any assignments that are worthwhile to get by instead of waiting for the perfect dream opportunity to come along.
It’s a good idea to look for work in places where not everyone else is looking. CareerBuilder and Monster.com are not going to net may people work for companies. Don’t even try to find legitimate at home opportunities from these sites. They don’t exist.
To find at home jobs with companies who hire sub-contractors, a good place to start is within your network of friends, family, daycare providers and acquaintances. Those who own their own business and run them out of their homes usually know where to find at home opportunities and have great ideas to make money. When speaking with women who run their own daycare centers from their own homes, I gathered ten ideas to make money at home.
1- Many major retailers who have catalogs hire at home professionals to process orders and take customer service calls. Look through a few catalogs and find their websites. Go on to their websites and look in the careers section or the contact us page. Get their FAX numbers or email and turn in a resume with a personalized cover letter letting them know you are available for work.
2- Open your own daycare center. You must childproof your home and get state licensing, but if you hadn’t noticed before, plenty of families get by pretty well on daycare center wages. Just be sure to set strict business hours or you will never have time to yourself.
3- If you are a good cook, call up companies and offer catering services. You will need to get a license from the state you live in to provide these services to companies, but it’s doable.
4- Offer to clean houses and businesses. While it’s hard work, once a good clientele is built up it’s a decent living.
5- Go to retirement villages and offer personal shopper services. One woman thought of this after watching the movie “In Her Shoes.” She’s been making a very good living for three years now.
6- A debt collection career is another way to make money from home. You just need to get in touch with collections companies to find opportunities for you.
7- Sell your stuff on eBay.
8- Open a service where you set up other people’s garage sales or help set up auctions.
9- Messenger services. All major companies need messengers. Off your services to them.
10- Take online surveys . Legitimate paid surveys can be found at clearinghouse websites like this one http://www.getpaidtotry.com/. Online survey jobsdon’t take much time and can net you a very nice income until you can find other work.
